Are E-cigarettes Real or a Joke?

I understand this might be off subject, but I am wondering if anybody in this forum has experiance with ecigarettes?

I've been planning to quit smoking for several years and have tried everything from the patch to perscription drugs. I am desparate, I have cancer and I do not feel like getting cheated or tricked into trying somthing even worse. Electronic cigarettes look like an interesting way to stop smoking cigarettes, but would they work? And how do I know which one to buy, most appear to be 100's of dollars and I can't afford to throw money away. I have cancer treatments to pay for.

If anyone has any experiance with this I would really apreciate some advice.
